Default Slow Start Up?

Hi,
I have just had XP installed onto a Compaq Presario 1200 laptop and now its taking ages to start up? I have not installed anything to load at start up.
It is an old machine, only 124MB Ram, 850 MHz..Processor is an Intel Celleron.
I have to use this machine for now as mine died

Is there any software out there that can help with this?
Or can you suggest something I might have done wrong?

Thanks in advance.
Neil

With those specs its no wonder it boots up so slow. I would go with Linux for that machine with those specs.

I more than totally wholeheartedly agree with Windows_Guru.

I'm surprised it even let XP install. The stated minimum ram is 128mb. I've had that on a computer, yet the windows setup only identified 127.8mb and wouldn't allow the install.

I think you would be better off putting Windows Me on that computer. You just don't have enough ram for XP.

Maybe to you its the worst. But not everyone thinks like you do. My wife has it on her computer and it run fine. She has a 800 mhz computer.

Amen to that. 7 has the xp performance with the vista eye candy. a full restart took less than 2 mins 30 seconds, getting back on IM via wireless connection in a conversation. 7 is a good improvement for startup.

Maybe I'm not reading it right but, 2½ minutes to the desktop? My Win 7 is 55 seconds and Vista Home Premium is one minute and 45 seconds to a usable desktop. Some services have been turned off in Vista but Win 7 is as it came.

Default Re: Slow Start Up?

mine was after doing a major update... and like i said.. that was using a wireless connection (had to negotiate the ip, and establish all security), then open my startup programs. It wasn't bad at all. (oh yes, remember the extra 30 seconds for the boot loader (I dual boot)).

Why don't you google for a program that speeds-up your boot. I know there are thousands of those out there...

DOS 3.0... Very rapid boot. Boots faster than your computer can POST.

Make sure your HDD is at the top of the BOOT menu in BIOS. Might shorten your BOOT time a little.

Upgrade the memory will help a little bit. Go into Add/Remove programs and then add/remove windows components and uninstall anything you don't need will help a bit.

That machine's specs will never be able to run XP well. Consider using a lighter OS such as Win2K or Linux - Win2K should still be obtainable via eBay and Linux is of course free. I'd suggest Xubuntu.
