| Windows It's the most common one, but is it the best? From Windows 1.0 to 7, talk about what's running on 9 out of 10 PCs. |

| If XP is already on C then why would you want to install it again?. You also can't have two partitions with the same letter. Operating systems always install on C and programs always want to install on C so why change it? You could use a program like Partition Magic to change the size of the partions without disturbing anything. XP will get along just fine on 40 gigs with service packs. A 160 gig hard drive will give you 149 gigs of space so C would be 40 gigs and D would be 109 gigs for your programs. E and F could then be divided for file storage and games.

| cool, and thanks... the reason for it is that i have one hell of a lot of c**p on my C drive, some of which i cannot delete, in the form of programs and files. i could probably delete all of it, however it would take years. I also have a Trojan which is proving to be impossible to remove, and i also have various viruses and malware. what i want to do is to install XP onto another drive (which will only ever hold XP, the operating system), and then i can load the computer onto the new drive, and when im on windows through the new drive, i would format drive C, so that everything gets wiped from it. The space could then be used to store games, files, etc, and the new drive with the operating system would be drive E. if that makes any sense...

| What you would be better of doing, is going for a clean format and install of XP onto your C drive, that way you get rid of all the virus/trojan, and all the programs. However this does mean that you have to install all the needed programs again, but its worth it. Then create a partion of your HD for data (Which will come as D(If you dont have a disk drive) or E), and then any external devices you wish to add. |

| i was origionally thinking along those lines, however i have bad luck and i seem to manage to screw up at a lot of stuff... so knowing me, i would probably install windows wrong or format wrong. also, i have some important files and a few programs that i'm not sure i could get again, like things that i got from my friends. I put them all in my current D drive, and scanned each of them before they were put there. because my D and E drives are currently on my 2 HDD, couldn't i just format drives C and E, and then install windows onto my E drive (which would be 40GB, only for windows), and then put games and new programs onto the new, formatted drive C...? thanks
