Post Windows 7 Beta build 6801 Review

I am thoroughly impressed. Windows has brought glory back to it's name. Windows 7 is a much more powerful, faster and compatible operating system, outdoing its old counterpart XP. Windows 7 also provides the same aero glass theme with transparency and also a new wallpaper slideshow feature (similar [exactly the same] as Mac's OS X). This new version also provides a different style taskbar where only the icon of the running application appears, when hovering over the icon, the preview window appears, clicking on the window unminimises it or focuses it. This feature was a good idea at first and is quite fun, however, when in a rush, or trying to get work done quickly, it gets quite annoying. Compatability was something i was very impressed by. Windows 7 is slowly catching up to the Ubuntu method of drivers (you plug it in and it works). My printer, which has always caused driver problems in the past, just worked. I plugged it in and it downloaded and installed the drivers in under a minute. I was very pleased. One thing i am not happy about however, is they still have vista like security (windows asking permission very frequently, having to run some programs as admin etc).

Overall, a great improvement from Vista. On the M$ scale of 1/10, 10 being good, ill give it a 9.

Looks alot like Vista with a few minor edits here and there...

But I do like the sound of the compatability methods...

That's pretty much what it is because they have finally taken much more time and effort to work on the actual system as opposed to the aesthetics.

It is supposed to be what Vista was supposed to be released as....... only time will tell. Did you unlock the large ribbon instead of just the taskbar? There is a HACK that will unlock what MS sees, not just what they release.

"Levan - One thing i am not happy about however, is they still have vista like security (windows asking permission very frequently, having to run some programs as admin etc)."

Start, Control Panel, Action Center, Security, UAC and it can be changed to whatever you like.

Bare in mind, that over 90% of issues can be resolved by letting users not have Admin... However, the way it's implemented in Vista/7 Stinks... Speaking from an IT Department aspect, letting folks install a lot of programs locally (and in loal account access only) causes a huge loss of control. and causes a lot of problems with conflicts between standardized software and unauthorized software.
I can go on with that topic... but i won't

Interesting, that explains why my school along with so many others are not willing to upgrade the OS (not that its a bad thing) and often end up downgrading the new laptops. Thanks, i've always wondered =)
