Default what version of Vista am I running?

I haven't been prompted to download SP1 yet on my laptop. I'm fairly certain that Vista hasn't been updated.

I'm not sure how to check what current version of Vista my machine is running. How does one go about doing this?

Click Start, enter winver in the box and hit enter. It'll tell you if SP1 is installed.
I believe that if there are devices on your system without drivers [i.e a question mark in Hardware Manager] then SP1 will not download.

To find out for sure, click Start, then right click on Computer, then select Properties. The screen that comes up lets you "view basic information about your computer".. Right there it will show you what version of Windows Vista you have. IF you have SP1, it will say so right there. Hope that helps!

went to start, typed "winver" and it doesn't say anything about sp1. there are no question marks in the device manager and i've tried updating manually.

SP1 does exist for Vista. Just go to Microsft's website and download it. I just updated my XP Professional to SP3.

Alot of people have reported that SP1 doesn't seem to come as an automatic update. This is because Microsoft temporarily removed this from updates because there was an issue with something being compatible but i think its been added back to updates now so you should eventually receive it automatically soon

I have SP1 now. It was offered via Windows Update. If you let it install from Window Update it is a much smaller file (65 megs instead of 750).

That would only be because it has already installed part of the update already. SP1 is much bigger than 65Mb

Right! SP1 has all the updates from start to present plus some fixes. If you get it through Windows Update the file is smaller if your computer is up to date. If you download the file manually you get everything.
