Unhappy Tray icon issues

I have a tiny problem with my tray icon. Some programs show up in the tray icon whenever they feel like it. The big icon that I need to be shown in there that does not show is the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon. For some weird reason this icon stopped showing up. I run maintenance on my computer weekly using:
1.Avast Antivirus
2.CCleaner
3.Spybot Search and Destroy
4.Ad-Aware 2007
5.Ashampoo Windows Optimizer
6.AusLogics Disk Defrag
So as you see, my computer is as clean as it can be. Any suggestions on this tray icon issue?
Thank You.

I know Vista had an update where that wasnt required to do, but I don't know if you are using vista or not. What OS are you using and what are you trying to remove?

The way i would address it is to Right-Click the Task Bar, chose Properties. Then on the "Taskbar" tab, near the bottom is a tab to hide inactive icons. Chose CUSTOMIZE, and then find the program you need, to it's right, use the drop-down box to chose "Always Show". Okay your way out of the boxes. This should fix what you needed to do.

If nothing seems to fix it, you can always leave the device plugged in until you shut the computer down. You can then savely remove it.

Hmm, can you still access your USB stick mvia my computer?

and if you have a lot of icons appearing at start up, i would have a look in msconfig. And disable any programs that you do not want to start uip on boot.
