Well with those specs Vista should run fine. I have a laptop that runs Vista with a few bumbs, but I get over them. The compatibility is not as big of a deal as a lot of people make it sound. Also, IMHO, I think Vista is better then XP. Although, XP does have its strong points. Like taking less resources, and being compatible with almost everything. I am a programmer, software developer, and game developer, and have no issues running all my development software on Vista. It actually comes down to more of a personal opinion on what you will use it for, and what you plan on doing with it. If you are using lots of older software, and older hardware, XP would probably be the better way to go. Right now, a lot of the compatibility bugs are worked out of the software, so most of the new stuff will run good on Vista. I would say Vista. That is just my opinion.

I'd go for XP. But as erickj92 said, it comes down to what you like.

I think ASH sum's it up nicely. If you want speed, stability and compatablity then go with XP. The only thing I believe is better in Vista than XP is the Security. But you can make XP just as secure with 3rd Party Security Aps

You can get a bad hard drive from any manufacturer so that doesn't make them a bad buy. As for operating system I had a dual boot with XP and Vista and wasn't using XP so I got rid of it. Older programs installed on Vista can be run as XP sp2 by right clicking on the icon, selecting Properties, Compatibity and checking the box for XP.

I have had 2 Hitachi drives fail on me personally. However, I expect it's because they were both notebook models and I tend to move my laptop around with the drive running...

EXACTLY ON THE POINT!!! i say that if you are doing basic computer functions ( web browsing and using standard software) then vista is fancy and makes u feel good but if you are going to be using some of the more under the table software and programs such as limewire, Styles, and other "sketchy" programs, then i say XP... because personally i like to be able to go in and edit files and folders myself and customize everything myself(which vista does not allow)... so it all come down to what ur gonna use it for man
