| if you have a hp pc or compaq pc .. # Click Start, and then click Run. # Type the following into the Open field: Msconfig # Click OK. # From the Startup tab,(on the end of the pop-up window), remove the ticks next to pchbutton and pchnotify if they exist. # Click OK and restart the computer for the changes to take effect. After the computer restarts, a message about using Msconfig appears (Windows Me and XP only). To continue using Msconfig , click OK and then close the System Configuration window (do not restart the computer). To prevent the pop-up message from appearing again, place a tick next to Don't show this message again, and then click OK. .

The bloodstained history. Material desire. Hunger. Sexual Drive. Desire to dominate. Desire for fame. Humanity. As long as there is a body, desires will be born. The human ego will never disappear as long as desire remains present. Humans will continue to fight to fulfill their bodies desires and it will never end. At this rate there is no future. |

| Is it better to add the extension, yes, is it needed? Not necessarily. The system looks for 3 types of files .com, .exe and then .bat (I think, in that order) Here is an example. I have Task manager open, and somehow the Windows Shell crashes. I can click on the FILE menu and select the Run command. When the dialog box pops up, I can restart the shell by typing C:\Windows\explorer and click on RUN/OK/Execute. The executable for the shell of windows (GUI) is explorer.exe This will relaunch the GUI, and get your desktop running again (baring other problems) Let's take a different example. Let's assume you are using the command prompt and want to format a floppy. you just type format a: and hit enter. The format comand is not built into the kernel of DOS or Windows (it's not part of command.com in DOS as other commands like DIR). When you type that you actually are calling the FORMAT.COM executable. It is typically in the folder c:\windows\system32 and the system knows to look for any typed commands there first. On some older systems, there was also a format.bat or format.exe. however the com is first in the search list. Are there some variables... YES, namely the systems PATH command, and the directory in which your command prompt is in when you initiate it. Typically it will look first in the path, then in the directory in which you are located. WOW.. someone thought that reading the old DOS books cover to cover was wasted time But it is better to add the extension, at least on some of my systems be they older or higher security systems, because I do hack the system enough to NOT look for EXE's COM's or BAT's because that royally messes with virus'
