Default 64-bit Vista

For anyone who is interested:

Windows Vista: 64-bit Editions

I found this today while surfing MS for 64-bit options. You do not have to have Vista Ultimate to get 64-bit accessibility, though Ultimate is the only CD that includes a 64-bit install free-of-charge.

For customers like myself, who own Home Basic/Premium, you can purchase a DVD that contains a 64-bit install. The prices is $9.95 + S/H according to the website.

Just some information for anyone who may not know already.

Note: You must have a valid product key for your current version of Vista to enable the ordering of the 64-bit content.

All versions of VISTA are found on the DVD. Thus, if you purchase home basic, and later decide to upgrade (ROFL) say to one of the business levels, you only need to contact M$ and purchase a new license key. You may use the same DVD to install. Now, I believe that 32-bit and 64-bit are on different DVD's.

I believe the price you are stating is to in effect nullify your 32-bit key.

The price I am stating is to upgrade from, for example, Home Basic 32-bit to Home Basic 64-bit.

I believe it has a while to go. Until programmers start to develop 64-bit apps I see no benifit.

I only medium/basic level of computers,
but i thought i read 64 bit is approx from memory some 20% faster on tested apps.
is this the main reason to go 64bit? i have read 64 bit unfortunately has a LOT of compatibility problems still.

im sticking to 32bit for some time.

I fell my 64 bit processor is a little faster then my 32 bit CPU, but I just added 3 GB of RAM for a total of 4 so it is probably that for the most part and yes 64 bit does have so compatibility issues so I would stick with 32.

A 64 bit processor will not be any faster than a 32 bit processor for most applications. It only when you are working in larger memory environments, above 4 GB where you will see the advantage. Most home computers have yet to reach the 4 GB mark in total installed memory. Maybe the next version on windows will require 4 GB to run though

At this point, since most applications are compiled for 32 bit, then it is best to just run the 32 bit OS.

Windows XP has a 4Gb RAM limit. To make use of more RAM, you need to run Server 2003, and buy more than the cheapest level (web server).
