| Hi, I have a quick question. I own a Sony Vaio FE660 notebook that I bought around a year ago. My brother is about to purchase a Sony VAIO N365E that has Windows Vista Home Premium installed. I was wondering, if I was willing to wipe my hard drive and clean up all the crapware that is installed on Sony VAIO's, can I use his recovery disks to give my notebook Vista HP? They are the same brand, but I was wondering do they check the BIOS or other settings to detect if is in fact the same computer the disks were burned on. Thanks for your help! Drew Russell |

| Hi there Drew, Firstly, welcome to CompuForums. I hope that you can visit our forum often in the future and post - rather than just receiving our help and advice, and then never visiting again. Not giving back to the community in some way is stealing from everyone who has helped you. We provide our help for free, and all we ask in return is that you participate in our forum and refer your friends, or consider a premium membership. Not returning once we have helped you is stealing. Legally, you may only use the recovery disks on the computer they came with / were burned on. Plus, unless you want the features that Vista includes, I do not recommend it [it came with my new laptop, and today I've been fixing several problems that randomly appeared.

| Thank you for your quick response. So, can I install them and have them work? I want Vista because I want DirectX10, and also, my office is upgrading all of our work computers to it, and I want to have it on my personal computer as well. I know that legally, it is wrong. However, do you think that it will work. Since it is OEM, I don't believe that it will even call for an activation. However, even if it does, I will have the code. Do you think that it will work??? |

| We cannot advise you on how to do something that's illegal. Technically however, there's nothing to stop it from not working [apart from maybe a few drivers missing]. Just note that upgrading to Vista won't upgrade you to DX10. You'll need a DirectX graphics card to do that, and they are yet to be made for laptops. And most laptops have graphics cards that are impossible to replace.

| Maybe in the US, but I'm yet to see one that's not over £1000 and has DX10.

| Just an update. I guess I had a change of ethics. I decided to buy the Vista Home Premium full version (OEM) from NewEgg. And, I didn't like it too much. My computer seemed far less functional and responsive as it did when I had XP, so I deleted the partition. Anyway, I now have mod'd my XP's desktop and am happy with it. Thank you for your support! --Drew |
