Default Life after Vista

Life after Vista (thank God!) will be with Windows "Vienna". This will possibly be named "Windows 7", but Microsoft hasn't officially released the name yet. It's scheduled to be released in 2009, and is being compiled at this time. Microsoft has been working on this project since 2000 (7-years in the making). There will be a new everything with this version.

Hopefully it will be better than Vista, yet user friendly like XP. Any thoughts?

I really hope this is User Friendly. And only 2-3 years after the release of Vista.
I hope its not too rushed

Default Vista

I believe that Windows Vista was intended to be only a temporary source of income for Microsoft, such as Windows ME (which is probably why it's so crappy). Thought Windows Vienna has been in design since 2000: 7-years now, and 9-years at its expected release.

If Microsoft can't get this one right, they never will.

Exactly.

I was running ME until about 2 years ago, and it was very good. I don't like Vista that much, but its OK. How long was Vista in development for? Because it turned out crappy

In short - They better get it right

Vista was going to be amazing - a new filesystem and several advanced features, and they shown a very early alpha of it back in 2000. However, MS dropped the origional code in 2004 and decided to start from scratch, and Vista ended up being basically be a slightly changed XP, which is a slightly changed Windows 2000, which is a slightly changed Windows NT.
I've got a feeling that MS will start developing again the OS they had in 2004, and this will be Windows Vienna. And I hope they name it something sensible this time - Windows Vienna does seem like a good name.

My girlfriends son just bought a new pc with Vista on, and although i asked and asked the saleman to take the HDD out and gimme one with XP on (he actually agreed Vista is pants) we had to have the drive that was ther e(Phooey!!)

Anyway, got it home sorted it all out, and my conclusion.......

its pretty, looks good, (that could be the new LCD42" tv its running through though!!!)
If you follow windows logic, you can work round things, but its a pain in the arse, i counted 5 clicks to do what 2 would in XP, a further 4 to get into settings, and then it was all click click click to confirm.......Surely i meant yes i want to access this file on the first bloody click!!!

Xp much better, Vista looks pretty, but its deffo not user friendly. I hope this new Vienna or Windows 7 will have the useability of XP. But do we really have to wait 7 years for it??? Come on Gates!!! your Microsoft FFS, get ya finger out LOL

Ya, I know. While I don't currently run vista, I was a beat tester. I loved vista. I love all the new features. I am just weeks away from getting a real copy of vista. As far as vista goes, don't knock it until you've tried it.

But, let's just face it, idea's that haven't already been done yet are running low. The average Joe will not be able to notice many of the changes beyond the pretty see-through windows. That's where Microsoft's advantage lies.

Anyway, I believe the future of operating systems, and software in general, lie in the hands of open source and freeware.

to be quite fair I am no longer excited by Windows, I see no benefit in the operating system, and if you dont use games like me then Linux and OSX are perfecto. Long live opensource really.

I've been reading various forums, especially for feedback about Vista (just got new computer in March with it installed). It has amazed me how many people put it down, when it's obvious they haven't even used it.

Unless you were a beta tester, the longest anyone has been able to use it is since Jan., so only 4-5 months. I have had ZERO problems so far, saw all my peripherals without a problem (besides having to download a driver for my scanner).

I can remember when XP came out. A LOT more problems initially than with Vista (that I've seen). OK, I admit I like GUI. I know that it eats more memory than XP, but... so... get more memory! If you really want a fast computer, work with a blue screen with no bells & whistles.

I also think that some people are so anti-MS that Anything they do is bad out of the box...

Just my 2 coppers.

Vista came on this Laptop I brought yesterday... As I've used it before, I knew what to expect.
I hadn't even done anything to it when I attempted to get on the 'net to download some antivirus software - and it was giving me runtime errors!

HOWEVER: I know that Vista is a new OS and MS are still working out the problems. After installing updates, I've had no problems. I think that Vista will be great once the first few bugs have been found and killed. There have been problems with every single new Windows version released, and all have been fixed with free service packs [with the exception of Windows Me, but we won't count that].

Also, the reason Vista may seem laggy on older machines is that we're used to running a 6-year-old OS on a much newer machine. When XP was released, an 800mhz CPU was considered to be a pretty extreme performer...
