| Hi, I have installed a copy of Windows Vista Home Premium, and when it installs the updates from the internet, it crashes on restart. It gets to the black Microsoft screen, then the BSoD appears (flashes), and it tells me that Windows couldn't be started. I restart with my Windows DVD, and it tells to to do a system restore. So I restored it to the moment before the updates were installed, and it starts up fine. It's only when the updates have installed that it causes a problem. Is there a way I can sort this out? |

| Hello Mattnz, Firstly, welcome to CompuForums. I hope that you can visit us and post often in the future - it helps us to grow, and it's only fair that if we help you, you help us. To be honest, I do not suggest installing and using Vista right now. It's really just a bloatware operating system and offers no real benefits over XP - the features it introduces can already be done on an XP system with free software. With that said, however, there are people who want it - and I suggest not using it until SP1 comes out. When it does, shops will be keen to sell the copies without Vista SP1, meaning plenty of bargains, plus you can then install SP1 after Vista resolving all the issues which will surface in the future, like the one you have told us about above. If you still want to continue using Vista let us know. But I have not installed it, and nor have any of the admins or moderators here. Again, we suggest using XP until SP1 is released.

| Hello, and thanks for the quick reply! Just to let you know, that I have got the problem sorted now. What I thin it was, is that I had just 'upgraded' my version of XP. However, I then tried a fresh install, and all is working fine now. Just another question: Do existing Vista users get SP1 free, or do we have to pay for it? Thanks for the help! Matt |

| SP1 will be free, just like all other service packs released for previous Operating systems. I'm glad that the issue has resolved itself - often running an upgrade install can cause problems in the future. I hope that you can visit us in the future
