If it's got decent enough specs go for XP but if it came with Win2K then it will probably run slow with XP loaded. Do you have a copy of Win2K anywhere? We will assume that it's legal and the computer has a licence to run it.

You might just want to download and burn a copy of Ubuntu or Xubuntu Linux [doing so is free and completley legal]. The Linux operating system is free and so is the software that runs with it to provide a Windows-like experience. It is slightly different to Windows but you can do everything such as web surfing, letter writing, and everything else.

Welcome - Ubuntu: Linux for human beings > Ubuntu, fully featured but designed for modern PCs [3 years old or less]. You can order a free CD of the slightly older version, but shipping takes around 3-5 weeks.
http://www.kubuntu.com> Almost the same as Ubuntu but the user interface is much more similar to Windows. Good if you're just starting out.
Xubuntu Home Page | Xubuntu.org > Good for older computers. Interface is a little more simple but it's functional. Steepest learning curve from Windows in my opinion.

It would be best to start a new thread in the Linux forum, in case anyone has the same problem, it would be easier for them to find the solution.
