Default No options for CD Audio recording

I wanted to take a part of a song and make it in to a ring tone. The first thing in this step is to record a portion of the song. I used to play the song on Windows Media Player, weather it be from CD, Web Site, or other means.

It seems that I was able to do this in XP Home Edition. I was able to use the sound recorder in windows and check the cd Audio in properties in the setting for Recording. I also was able to install a third party sound recorder software and do the same.

But since I have XP Media Center. I am not able to do this. No matter what software I install. i only have an option to record from Microphone, Rear Mic, and Line. I have no other options.

Is there any way to get that setting back?

Personally I am not 100% sure on this [Media Center came with this laptop and I have the option to record from CD, Line, Mic and the stereo output mix. However, I suggest this workaround. Rip the song that you want to use, using Windows Media Player. Make sure that in the options dialogue it's set to encode in MP3 with no copy protection. Then, download and install the excellent Audacity software from http://audacity.sourceforge.net/. Open the MP3 in Audacity, and edit away. You might want to spend a while getting to know the various controls, either by playing around with the software, or just reading the documentation at http://audacity.sourceforge.net/help/documentation. And to get the setting back, one guess of mine would be that your copy of XP Home came with your machine and your OEM also put drivers for your soundcard/chipset which provided the extra options. You might want to download the sound driver and see if it gives you the option.

I've actually done this before, but my cell phone has a memory stick that I can plug into my computer for easy transfer. I took the basic mp3 of the song I wanted to edit and used any old program (I did have to go find one but it was freeware) to convert the file type from mp3 to .wav file, then used Fruity Loops Studio to open the .wav and edit it. It's pretty easy with Fruity Loops, I spent maybe a half hour doing it the first time I had done it. It just doesnt involve recording so you keep the quality of the song.

Have you tried just using a different program that creates .wav instead of sound recorder?
