Question New PC: Vista or XP Pro?

I just 99% built my new PC, and all that's left is the HDD to come in the post.

Which operating system should I use? XP Pro (already have) or Vista final beta release (which can download from microsoft)?

My pros/cons are:

Vista:
Cons:
Beta; not stable. When I want to upgrade I will have to re-install everything (which means I will need to somehow backup my files).
Doesn't have drivers for everything yet.
Pros:
Looks cool
The way forward
More features
My PC is more suited to it.

XP Pro:
Cons:
It's not vista
Pros:
It's got all supported drivers, and is stable (or at least as stable as windows can be).
Best (stable) windows edition so far.
No need to download

Which is best for me?

P.S. I don't want Linux :p

Why not Linux? You should at least do a dual boot and actaully try it out for a week. To be honest, I wouldn't spend any money on either.

I just don't want linux :p I've tried it before and didn't really like it. Also there's compatiability issues.

And no worries; I wouldn't be spending money on either. Vista is free to download anyway.

You should consider trying it again - Linux really has moved on. When I first tried Linux, I couldn't even get proper colours working on my monitor. Now, it all runs fine. Try a live CD of Ubuntu [or Kubuntu] and see for yourself.

I would go with XP Pro. It seems to be pretty stable.

OK So i guess XP is best for you for now, but later you will need to upgrade to Vista. But maybe if OSX gets onto i386 that would be worth a look, but I cant see that happening soon without Apple sueing you lol.

Okay, I'll start off with XP Pro. Then once Vista comes out stable, I'll use that instead.

Thanks peeps.

I hope you're licenced...

If you are not, expect a big fight with nag screens.
Another quality product from Microsoft.

How did everything work out themoose? I would have chosen XP Pro as well as it isn't beta (as you mentioned) and it has all the drivers you'll possibly need. Once Vista has been out (non-beta) for awhile then I would consider moving over but not until then. I hope all went well with the choice you made.

I went ahead and installed Windows XP Pro. I'd have liked to have Vista... I think I'll get it once it comes out. Meanwhile I'll just settle with this Vista skin :p

If I were you, I wouldn't go and buy Vista as soon as it hits the shops - there are bound to be flaws that MS haven't picked up on. The best thing to do would be to wait until your PC needs upgrading, then buy a [cheaper] OEM copy with the part you are buying.
