you can also do things like setting up a listing for your site on google maps and yahoo local listings. I've done that for a website I have. Also you can do things like adsense or pay per click with google as well. Just some suggestions.

Submitting to search engine will definitely takes time.
Before you are able to increase your site ranking in the search engine, there are lots of groundworks needs to be done. Some works that I`ve done for my site are such as : a) Submit your site to social bookmarking sites - such as diggs and technorati b) Visit blogs related to your niche and leave legitimate comments with links back to your site c) Write article related to your niche, submit it to article directory with backlink to your site. d) Include your site link in your signature in emails. e) Introduce your site to your friends first. But make sure you have a "Tell a friend" tab in your site. Finally, your might want to consider optimizing your SEO, to increase your site ranking in the search engine. There are lots of SEO advices available in the internet nowadays. I started a new blog somewhere in early this month. I can see only 4 visitors came through search engine. Most visitors came through referral sites, or my marketing efforts through social networking. |

ninkugumi had some good points.
I've found blogging and social bookmarking sites to be pretty helpful. Also, creating slideshows or a short clip describing your niche and posting on youtube and places like slideshare helps.
