I'd start off learning the basics. Borrow some books from your library and I can show you some online tutorials. You might also consider taking some classes too.

Do you already know HTML coding? If you do, here's a pretty nice tutorial on design: Mike Markel's Web Design Tutorial

If you don't, try this one:Basic HTML Tutorial

I don't know HTML and just quick glanced over the tutorials. I hope these help!

Default WEb Design, Authoring, and Development

Web design, authoring and development can offer a rewarding career and /or hobby. Congratulations on your decision to pursue it.

As a developer, the first place to begin learning web design is by mastering the various forms of HTML and CSS. W3 Schools is a very good place to start and should be regarded as an authority. You can find W3 Schools here: W3Schools Online Web Tutorials

Start by learing HTML, XHTML and CSS. Then build your knowledge and skills by incorporating XML, Javascript, and PHP into your coding language. There are many fantastic places on the web to learn, but I recommend starting with the W3 Schools.

Have fun and enjoy yourself.

Yo!

Well w3schools is definetly te best place to learn - as you learn standards/semantics -not just crap code. After you learn (x)HTML and CSS, start with a scripting language - either Javascript or PHP and MySQL. Once you fel you understand that language, do the other one. Once you know both Javascript and PHP, start with Ajax...

What language you learn depends what kind of sites you want to build, asking us for help on how to learn is actully pointless - just find a tutorial and go at your own pace. When you start having trouble, then come for help,

BP

I am currently using w3schools.com and I use this forum a lot to learn everything I need to know to design web sites but I am in need of a website for a home-based business I started recently and I would like to get it up and ready to go fairly quickly, so I do not have the time right now to learn everything and design it myself. I am going to pay a professional to build it for me and have him handle everything. My question is this: How much should I pay this person for the website if it rather basic and not very big? What is the average price out there right now for this kind of thing?

Wow. See, that's something so basic, yet I wasn't even aware of it because I have never even attempted to build a website. I have a lot of learning to do, but I will look into those programs you mentioned and give it a shot. Thank you!

Depends on what you want your site to be - for a business site, you are probably going to want product management or a more complex CMS...for a completely custom script you are looking at about $500, though some people may offer cheaper or more expensive services. With programming you generally get what you pay for, and you should always look around and check the programmer's portfolio...

Cheers,

BP
