Default "Contact me" vs. webmail...

I've ran into this dilemma a few times and I was wondering how "real" site developers are dealing with it.

When you type something as an HTML link (an e-mail address) - the proper decor would be mailto:XYZ@XYZ.com - but with everybody using yahoo mail and gmail...what do you guys do for this?

I mean obviously if somebody's smart they can right click and press "copy link to clipboard" then paste it in the "to" box of their e-mail and erase the "mailto:" - but what about for the pre-step user who isn't that far and would just like to click the link, but uses webmail...what do you do for them?

Simple: Use a HTML / PHP form. mailto: links are the favourite way of spambots to get your email address. Mailto was great when everyone used the mail client that came on their computer, but a lot has changed these days.

Yeah, I would say a form would be the best idea. You could even have it use rich text using the AJAX of the web today. Which is far superior and easier for your users than being launched into a email client that they may not even use, as many people now use webmail.

Ah well, sux for me, I don't know/use any of that stuff.

I just usually throw in an e-mail link at the bottom of web pages 'n such so people can holla at me easy if something isn't working. I don't have a "high traffic" site - you won't even find it on google, it's mostly a server I use to transfer stuff, host crap, etc.

I really don't know anything about forms and the works

It's quite simple - you simply set up a HTML form and a PHP backend. You don't really need any coding experience, as there are plenty of tutourials on the net [google for "php form mail how to" or similar]

All you need is a webhost running PHP and an email address.

And then what, direct all the "contact me" links to that form page?

Yep. You could even have a miniature form on the page where the link is if you'd like.

If you're not willing to receive tons of spam from your form you'd really want to add a security code to your form. If you won't add the code, as soon as your website will be popular enough on Google, you'll receive LOTS of spam on your email.

Yes, this is a very good idea. I only have had my site for a few weeks now but I need to put a code on it already because the spammers are relentless.
