Default Hosting My Web Site

Hope That This Qualifies As A Networking Topic:

Hello everyone. I am creating a website and I have decided that I am going to buy a webserver to host my site. I can easily purchase a webserver, but I just need some of you to give me some pointers because this is my first time owning a webserver. What kind of security should I have installed, how often should I update, what kind of server is most reliable so there will be minimal downtime etc. Any replies would be appreciated! Thank you.

Hi again Revolt,
Welcome back to the forum - I hope to see you here more often in the future!

I moved this thread to Website Development as it would be the most appropriate place for it.

Where are you going to host your site - in a datacentre or at home? Most people start with just a cheap shared hosting plan and a domain, and when the site is large enough, a dedicated server - in a datacentre. Running a server from home isn't difficult, but it isn't that reliable and generally it will be slow loading for visitors.

So you suggest running out of a datacentre? How would I go about doing that? I am more likely going to be running from home, just because i am not familiar with "datacentre". Can you elaborate for me?

It's basically a large building full of servers. All sorts of things such as air conditioning, backup generators and powerful UPSs, as well as several links to the internet backbone, ensure your site stays online. The vast majority of sites are in datacentres, including this one. I actually buy webspace from a company that owns a server in the datacentre and "share" the server with others. However at the rate we're going, we might end up on our own server. There are even free places where you can host your site, such as VP Host - Quality Free and Reseller Hosting.
