How to Install PHP and MySQL Under Windows XP

A Review: by cityPCservice

Do you want to learn how to install PHP and MySQL in Windows XP? This White Paper download describes and instructs precisely how to install PHP and MySQL (open-source) in a Windows XP environment. Documented in PDF, the author provides an excellent step-by-step instruction, details all the software applications the environmentals needed, resource allocations required, and software download sites. The website download location for the PHP Windows Binaries for Windows XP (Home and Pro) are detailed in this document, and all the software required is FREE.

In this document download, the author does well in details and screen shots, but falls a bit short on the document's layout. He does do a well job in providing all the links to download the FREE software. He also points out and warns of possible problematic installation areas, and offers work-around tips and other extremely useful information. The author makes use of sharing personal experience (a big plus ) and offers recommendations related to that experience.

Here is a sample text of the full instructions:
Quote:
First, download the 4.3.10 Windows version of PHP (the latest version of PHP available at the time of writing) from < hyperlink >. Scroll down the page to find the Windows Binaries. Select the complete zip package—not the installer—so that you have all of the files you need. A web page is displayed that prompts you to select a mirror host near you to start the download. Choose one that is appropriate. Windows prompts you for a location on your computer to store the zipped file. Next, unzip the file into the C: directory and allow the program to recreate its directory structure. When the unzip utility is finished, you will have a new folder called C:php-4.3.10-Win32. Now, open Windows Explorer and rename the folder to C:php.
The author also make very good use of images and graphics to help the user:

What could have been improved upon by the author?
Document Layout. The document has been publishd in PDF format, but utilizes a "newspaper/newsletter" layout with columns. -->Bad!<-- The columns need to be eliminated. The information need to be presented in standard User-Friendly PDF format, without the use of columns. In a lengthy PDF document, the use of columns require the reader to contually scroll down, and then back up -- causing loss of concentration, loss of focus, and just overall annoying.

On a scale of one to ten (with 1 as the worst and 10 as perfect), I would grade this White Paper as a nine ( 9 ) -- a ten point Rating wouldn't be appropriate due to the page layout. But nevertheless he did an excellent job in documentation.

Okay, so where do I download it at?
