So, I'm on an old Netgear WGR614 V7 and I'm getting a little tired of how damned slow my Download speed is. I want to up it to 150 mbps+ from my current 54 mpbs. Simply put, getting 0.2 - 1.2 mb download speeds is annoying, and I'd love to get it up a fair bit. Any recommendations? I'm on virgin media, by the way. |

I am using a Dlink 615. It's inexpensive and I am acheiving great speed. I am not so sure you need to upgrade. It may a case of tuning your Netgear and telling us what internet package you buy from your provider. A lot of providers now sell their packages according to how much you want to download. I was on a 4 gig package and so download load speeds were around 400 mbps. If I downloaded more than 4 gigs in a month then I was subject to overage fees. I moved up to the 8 gig package and now download in the 800 mbps range. I use the internet for Netflix as well and have never come close to the cap on my 8 gig package.

Download speed is not just determined by your wireless connection on your router, but by the service you get from your ISP. For instance, if you were on an ADSL Connection and an "up to 8Mbps" service then you could be getting anything from around 6Mbps down to 1Mbps depending on how far you were down the local loop from the exchange. It is different if you are on cable but still determined by the ISP.
Yes you can improve your local connection speed between your devices and the local router by improving the wirless connection from say 54Mbps to the faster 300n standard, but bear in mind that the 300Mbps standard means 150Mbs in each direction. If your overall download speed from the Internet is slow then I would check your contract with the ISP first and determine what speed you are paying for and take it from there first. ________________________ This user added the following: ________________________ Just as a follow-up to my last, if you do want a nice cable router then the Linksys E1500 Wireless N300 Cable Router with Speedboost is pretty good in my opinion.
