Who's to blame for the current state of the security software "industry?

This is in no way a scientific poll, and it is all about OPINIONS. Although, some fact may come into play.

Computer manufacturers, because the vast majority of people happily pay for whatever crappy AV etc. product is loaded on their new PC.

Default Re: Who's to blame?

is it the manufacturers who put it on, the people who buy it, or the security firm who makes the crap? But why the need? Why all the virus, worms, bots, spyware, malware, bloatware? Where does it start? Does it start with some lazy bum who won't work an honest living? some guy with a grudge? a manager at a company creating job security?

Let us explore these possibilities, and let it all hang out.... i have no proof for anything, not even my own opinion..........

Does (L)users stand for Linux users?

And I have chosen 'other'.

I think its the exact opposite. People who can earn a living from someone elses (Microsoft) own flaws? I wouldn't call these hackers / virus makers... I think what they do is fantastic. - I mean, if I ever caught a virus, I would be pissed off, but .. I haven't, nor will I ever.

I blame it on Microsoft's stupidity.

no Users the dumb ones, the ones who don't care about what they have on their computers and don't care what others can get to.... the targets of criminals...

Linux users, rarely fall into that category

Lusers is more the back side comment for some users, if you work in IT

Default Re: Who's to blame?

I would say the users, but the fact is you can still get viruses through drive-by infecters as seen in the recent ASProx, where many millions of webpages of have been "injected" to include javascript tags in their bodies and titles.

I would say security companies, but I am doing a good bit research in the area and it is very difficult to identify hackers or anomalous behavior unless you have a large knowledgable IT staff. Creating security products are still in infancy stages.

The criminals, definitely, but the ultimate problem is the lack of law enforcement in cyberspace. There is a major lack of knowledge in law enforcement: a lack of support, lack of staff, and an really sad set of laws. I think if we had better law enforcement, than we would see a lot less crime. Supposedly only 10% of cybercrime is reported.
