hey guys, listen i don't know if this is in the right area as it's not exactly 'software' so if there's a more appropriate place, then correct me if you will! anyway, last week ( i have'nt got round to sorting this out yet ) for some reason all the icons on my desktop have changed appearance, for example my msn icon has changed to my firefox icon (even though it's still 'msn') firefox to my avast icon, my media player to my AVG and so forth. I'm sure some of you have come accross this before so i'm confident you know wot I am talking about. I've currently started some scans with my AVG 8, Avast and Norton 360 and wondered if this would solve the problem? Any ideas to what may be causing this? thanks for your time!

oh yes, if it helps, im running vista, slate me if you will =).

Norton will break things, not fix them...

Wow, thats really weird. Do you recall what you were doing before you first noticed the change? Downloading, installing, updating etc.

hmmmm don't hold me to this as im not ENTIRELY sure, but i think i was downloading real player u know, then things got a bit sketchy! needless to say i've uninstalled that now!

Have you tried a system restore?
If that doesn't work the only way to fix this, that i can think of, would be to right click, properties, customize and the click restore default under the icon settings. Now this method is only done one by one so it is very time consuming, Unfortunately i myself do not know any other ways.

just so i'm understanding this correctly. you have 3 anti-virus running at once? not good.

second. did your icons switch in any kind of order? like did they all go down 1, or right 1, or go "down" 1 alphabetically?

if this doesn't help, wait to see if any1 in here posts something. if they don't, and your problem isn't fixed by 1 of the suggestions here/in the link/or using ONE anti-virus doesn't help, then good luck.

well....firstly....i no longer have the 3 AV's running, i've limited myself to only Avast, Ccleaner and Spybot s+d now, and it probably goes without saying, but as soon as i wiped off 360, my laptop is going one hell of a lot faster!

secondly, as Levan said, i did this manually (right click properties), thankfully i like to keep my desktop in working order so i only had around 7-8 icons to change. =)

Thirdly, the order did not change no, simply the appearance of the icon. As i mentioned, I have now corrected the status of the icon, however am still at a loss as to why this happened in the first place. hmmm.

well what i meant by the order, is did the icons replace each other in any certain order. like did your firefox go up, and so on. since its bee solved though i'm sure u can't remember. o well!.
