Windows Defender is for spyware and not an anti virus. There are a couple of good free anti virus programs, AVG Free - Download installation files & documentation, avast! 4 Home Edition - FREE antivirus software - Download

I hear that Internet Security 2008 - Trend Micro USA offers great protection from viruses. I believe it's $40-$50 a year to register up to 3 computers.

I would recommend AVG as well, I've had it for a couple years now and have never had any issues. There's been a couple occasions when a virus did execute and with AVG's auto protect it was able to stop the virus from completing its task. Had to do very little clean up to remove a program it had installed, but AVG has been very reliable in my experience with it.

Peter... you're more likely to be helped if you help a few other people yourself

Nonsense! I have only ever used AVG and never gotten anything and it has stopped a few things as well. It's like any other virus program, spyware, reg cleaner, etc., each one finds different things that they think are harmful. Who is to say which one is right? They all think they are right.

Have you ever tried another AV program on that computer?

Default Re: A good anti-virus?

man, this topic has gone on here soooo many times, this is just a suggestion to future posters about this and also, to the TS. There are tons of AV's out there and tons of Firewalls out there. Besides AV's and Firewalls like ESET Nod32 and Zone alarm, but besides that, anybody who looks for an AV or a firewall really all depends on the knowledge of the user, thier preferences and how hardcore they are in...downloading files, surfing the net. But i mean, if your just a casual user, maybe go on the net maybe 1'ce or 2wice a day, then something small would be in hand. You should really test things out, for yourself and switch things up a bit. In my opinion and a few years of experiance, i'd say that Nod32 would be the best out there. Another thing, if you want to download files, and you dont want the hassle of AV's and spending money and so forth...you should look at VirusTotal - Free Online Virus and Malware Scan | this is an online AV which has more than 10 AV's in line, back to back, that scans files. 24/7. and as they say, your better off scanning files with more than one AV. Happy searching.
