Exclamation Super Virus!!

My computer just had the worst virus I have ever encountered and it lived. Really I am not being melodramatic, every time me or any of my friends get this thing it always crashes our systems no matter what we through at it. So far the only thing that has worked was finding it's spy ware before the actual virus gets us. I am talking about Smitfraud. If you have ever had it in full swing you know how bad it is. Has anyone had success getting rid of it? Because even though I got rid of smitfraud spy ware my computer is still slightly off, my default browser is Firefox but I get pop-ups in IE that before today I never got.

So if you have had any success getting rid of the actual virus could please tell me, I have a nagging feeling I haven't seen the end of smitty.

I have had problems with SmitFraud before, but I ran Ad-Aware and it seems to remove it totally. However when I changed from AVG to Avast it blocked an attack from SmitFraud before it was able to do any damage at all.

yea, you can also try using ESET Nod32 Smart Security. This really gets the job done for about any virus out there. Also if you are having problmes with popups it could just be that you dont have a pop-up blocker and that the sites you are going to have popups. So goto google and download thier popup blocker and see what happens. i find it to be the best cheers

I would recomend Kaspersky. I used it one time and it was awesome and very easy to use. I had to get rid of it after my license ran out because I'm too cheap to buy another and just use AVG Free Edition. I have not heard about this virus before, though. I will have to research this a bit and dig a little deeper into it.

No NOD32 is paid for software. As for illegal copies, they will not work properly anyway. If you are looking for a free antivirus soloution I would strongly recommend AVAST HOME which is free. Stay away from MCaffe and Norton. And if you want to protect yourself against trojans then I suggest stearing clear of AVG too.

Mr. Pickles:

Why would to recomend stay clear of AVG? I have used AVG as a free virus scan for years, and only had one problem that McAfee cleared shortly after. As I think back, though, I have had lots of problems with AVAST. Clamwin and AVAST seemed to give me problems, so I ended up going back to AVG in the end.

But how many trojans has it missed? As long as Avast is the only product installed on the machine it'll cause no problems. AVG's scan rate is shockingly low compared to other products, and it brings about a false sense of security.

Yea I had AVG for a while but it was a pain, it seemed simple but to get it to really work can be trouble. I am using avast right now along with Spybot Search&Destroy.

Comodo is where I am having trouble. It alerts me whenever ANYTHING happens and I can't turn it off. I may be able to figure it out but I would appreciate some help with it or a better free firewall.

tomybhoy- I would recommend using Avast its much better with trojans and will certainly pick them up better than AVG.

After advice from a few guys here, I run the free Avast Home edition and Spybot search & destroy. I think this is a good and safe combination. I let Windows and the router look after the firewall side of things.

Most routers have built in firewalls [and pretty strong ones at that] but on a laptop it's always good to have an extra layer of protection, especially if the laptop often connects to public networks.
