I am told that Kaspersky is a good anti-virus program to use as it doesn't use much resources

ill say now , after the 4th virus i have gotten and has crashed XP , tot he point of no revivial wout out re-install .

avast has a good scanner , but the residential protection is not worth a damn ... i will never let it be the only system protecting me ... it is just as bad as nortin is when it comes to shields .... avg is still my top choice

@Dr. Computer : Well, I can only recommend Panda as a paying antivirus solution.

Personally, I'm not that keen on freeware antivirus apps.

I like other freeware apps, though, just not antivirus apps that are freeware.

Well for paid apps, nothing beats NOD32.

Im thinking of getting rid of uninstalling Norton and instead run Avast and AVG at the same time. Is there any problem with running 2 antivirus/firewalls at the same time?

Thanks Mike - reading other recommendations, what about this:
Antivirus: Avast
Antispyware : AVG Anitispyware
Firewall : Comodo
Can all 3 be installed and run together happily without screwing things up?

That combo should work great, and it's probably the best protection you can get when it comes to free software [alougth your router's firewall is probably enough, it is good to have a software firewall especially if you use a laptop on other people's /businesses routers]

Thanks for the info. I am thinking of doing this too because I really need to ditch Norton. It is just not worth the price for the amount of viruses it misses.

@pdwheeler : It's not a good idea to run 2 antivirus applications on your computer. It can cause serious problems for your computer and might even crash your computer.

I recommend installing one antivirus application and keeping it up-to-date and do a scan when you think you are infected.

Also I recommend scanning every file you download, before even opening it, just to make sure that it doesn't have anything harmful in it.

I always do that as a precaution to keep my system clean and to ease my mind about my computer's security.

Thanks for the advice. Im running Norton & Avast anitivirus at the moment, but when Norton asks for payment, I'll uninstall and carry on with Avast as the only antivirus. I plan to install only AVG Antispyware, not the anrivirus. Ive also read about my router's (Netgear) firewall and I think that will be sufficient.
