What is hijack exactly, and how do you use it? I've read a couple threads that talked about using it, but did not go any deeper.

I assume you're talking about HijackThis?

It's basically a program that will list all of the hidden programs and registry keys which could be evidence of spyware. This is analyzed by people who know what to look for, so they can spot if there's any nasty software running on the analyzed system.
