Avast won't prompt you, it'll update itself automatically and only show a MSN Messenger-style popup. It also does definition updates automatically, too.

I have not had a problem with AVG yet the virus protection and the spyware. The spyware version seems to be very affective.

AVG Antispyware isn't bad, but as I've said before, I've scanned machines that were running AVG before with Avast and a lot of viruses, particularly trojans, were picked up. No antivirus solution has a 100% rate, certainly not the free ones, but you may as well be using the most effective free AV.

Alternatively you can run Linux and get away with no antivirus software.

I used Norton for a really long time, but then it started bogging down my computer with about 11 processes called LuCallBackProxy, so I switched to AVG, since I heard it was good. After hearing so much about Avast, I'm gonna use it.

ya but do you agree that avg works well? i would rather have a program prompt me on whether to allow something, than to just "update" itself.

Mcafee does wonders for me at work (from an earlier post i gave testimonial) - However at home i use Windows Live One Care - So far no problems - Our local paper had comparisons to different protections a while back and surprisingly ones that you would have thought would have beeen the best were not.

Well it really depends on opinion. I would either choose AVG or Avast. AVG detects most viruses but has trouble removing them. Avast doesn't catch quite as many but removes them with ease. If I were you I would go with Avast

You missed out 'for lots of trojans' at the end there.

Kinda also missed the date "2007" was the last post. Topic has been dead for 4 months now

No hard feelings though Post on!
