Question Nortons

I don't want to open a can of worms, but on reading some replies to messages
Norton's does not seem to get a good reception. In 30 words or less, what is exactly wrong with
this program.I'm using CA,which came with the laptop(hope that's not as bad.......lol)

Norton uses an awful lot of resources, doesn't provide good protection, offers little by way of support and costs a shedload of money and is outclassed by many free packages.

There you go 30 words and no expletives not easy when you talk about f##*ing Norton!

As for CA, well don't know about the Kiwi government but many other governments issued public advisories stating that in the event of a DoS attack, CA will crap it's pant's and go and hide in a corner causing your computer to crash, protection to cease and let's just say that it's not good!

There are loads of free antivirus products on the market, we have several links listed on our Library page, which is best? That's a good question, hopefully someone else on the forum will answer!

Good Luck!

norton also takes a long time to scan your computer, misses a lot that freeware easily catches, and support is nearly non-existent. it kinda sucks and isn't worth my time.(YAY! 30 words!)
i've never heard of CA, so i can't comment on it, but i currently use avast(free) and it's by far better than norton.

I've used norton for 3 years, and just switched to avast a week ago, and the difference in performance was amazing. Norton sucks when don't have alot of ram or HD space.

I used to use NAV since they came out, finally I got tired of paying the 50 bucks every year for god knows how many systems and switched to AVG.

I really have no idea how good the AVG protection is but it seems to be decent, that with a ZA firewall and a teatimer reg cover seems to keep everything in check...

EDIT:
NAV just put a dent in everything, it'd have problems with all the programs it could, and it never actually protected me against a virus, I mean once in awhile I got an alert of a w32 - but it wasn't worth the aggravation.

AVG is okay, but not the best, as I found out when I ran an Avast scan on a machine that previously had AVG "protecting" it.

I was a hardcore Nortan user from the getko - even when I had like 5 computers - every one was equiped with nortan AV.

Then I smartened up, started using AVG AV.

Now Ash told me to go with Avast - So I'ma look into that - haven't had time yet

I'm also looking for a way to keep a registry lock so I can uninstall tea timer - but nobody has told me of any progs. for that yet :-\.

I gotta look at avast...as far as Nortan goes, it's a shame I was using it for so long and didn't realize better things out there. It's pathetic in so many forms.

if for some reason I need av protection I always go for avgfree, however I find antivirus protection an annoyance and waste of system resources so personally I don't use it. I keep a spare partition of the HDD and backup all crucial data to it. I'm actually careful online, unlike a lot of people i know. lol. and if it ever comes down to it doing a reinstall isn't so devastating with everything backed up.

I really do suggest you run Avast. If you run AVG, you may as well not bother with any AV at all. I've scanned systems after they've been running on AVG with Avast and been rather shocked at the result. Avast stops viruses before they even get to your hard drive and doesn't hog sys resources.

I'm sure that if you ditched it, your computer will seem like it's just been upgraded.
