Default AntiVirus

For Windows Vista, Microsoft recommends Windows Defender. As an IT Administrator, you should be familiar with this.

Windows Defender comes bundled with Vista, and most antivirus software for XP works with Vista, too. I personally use Avast with no trouble at all.

No, Windows Defender is for antispyware/adware. I use the Home Edition Non-Commercial version of Avast - downloaded from Free antivirus - avast! 4 Home Edition Download.

I would agree with ash get avast home its free and i have never had a virus since using it but it is a matter of opinion you could try active virus shield which is made by AOL kaspersky which is meant to have very high detection rates but not a good as defending.
