What are the stat's on your laptop? What version of Windows XP are you trying to install?

If it's Windows XP v1.0, then it was made before a lot of connections (i.e. SATA and PCI-e) were invented (Maybe this isn't true for connections on laptops, but I'm assuming it is). Service pack 2 introduced most of those drivers. If you don't have or want to buy a new disk, you can make a pre-updated installation CD though something called slipstreaming:

Slipstreaming

Also, you may have to look up the type of motherboard in there and see if the manufacturer's website has any drivers for XP installation.

Firstly Welcome aboard!

You may find that its quite difficult to even install xp sp2 on your laptop, without having to find all sorts of different drivers. I have a Advent 8117 and I gave up trying to locate the xp equivalent of vista drivers. One main issue is the High Def Sound on newer laptops. Can you post the make and model of your laptops.

Is this a sata hard drive. Windows XP-SP2 is not able to recognise Sata drives.

It may be recognised if you disable "SATA Native Support" or similar in your BIOS settings, but this varies from computer to computer and your mileage may vary.

What's wrong with Vista? I am running Vista Premium Home and have not really had any issues with it except for UAC for which I have found a way out of. Mines is the 64 bit version and really no problems there either.

I think you are going about installing XP the wrong way. The first thing you need to do is to to Dell and download all the drivers for XP. Go to Drivers & Downloads

After you have downloaded everything you need you stick in your XP disk and boot up, format the hard drive, install XP and then use the files you downloaded to get your video, sound, modem, lan, etc working.
