Well, after going through some stuff with my PC, (Which is 4 yrs old) I think im going to go Vista, but not without upgrading my PC. Heres my current setup: AMD Athlon 64 3500+ 1.5 gbs Ram Radeon X600 Video card 258GB HDD What should I upgrade? I know im def getting more RAM. But i have soe question. 1. Is it worth going to vista? 2. Is my Mobo good, or should I get a new one? 3. Anything else? I basically want to do a big update of everything. Problem is, I've been out of the computer scene for a few years. So these are probably really noob questions, but any help would be greatly appreciated. ![]()

I do not have and working experience with Windows Vista, but from what I understand from random comments and reveiws, XP is better if it can handle your system. I just upgraded my computer, and I stuck with windows XP. After 6 years and hundreds of updates, it seems to be a relatively sound program. Meanwhile, Vista seems to be where Windows XP was at it's beginning: a decent program overall, but full of minor flaws and program loopholes. Of course, if you plan on a big system (involving more than 4MB of RAM), you must get Vista. You didn't say what your motherboard is, but your graphics card is PCI-e, so I'd say it's new enough. Even though PCI-e v2.0 is out, v1 is still plenty to support new graphics cards. The rest just depends on what else you plan to change with your system (being able to support a new processor, having the right connections for a new case, etc.).

Can you still buy XP? I somehow lost my CD when I moved and so I had to install home edition (The one that comes with DELL's) And have 22 days left to use it, because I can't register it. This is my main problem. Im going to go to the few computer shops in my town and see if they could sell me one. As for my motherboard, I'm really not too sure as of now. all I know is that it's made by MSI. I'll check when i get home. From what i heard today, I think i'm going to stick with XP if I can find a disk. So any idea's on what would be best to upgrade? Thanks alot

I think you can buy XP still, Microsoft didn't discontinue it because the demand is so high. If you can't find it at the store, I know you can get it online. As for what to upgrade, that's up to you. Whatever you feel is lacking, replace (if you want permission to spend a ton of money on a huge graphics card, you have it

I recently upgraded from a pentium 4 to a fairly inexpensive dual core Intel. I do notice the difference. I think most folks are happy with any dual core that fits his or her budget. Check your motherboard manual for compatability. You're right, NVidia 8800 in some variation is everyone's favorite right now. 8600 seems to be a scaled down version for bargin shoppers (like me). I haven't really put my 8600 to the test yet, but I've read it will at least play even the most punishing games. For uninhibited, smooth performance, I think you'll need to spend the extra money on an 8800.

| My suggestion is that if XP is working for you, don't bother with Vista. It doesn't offer any real advantages over XP, other than a pretty interface that creates lag.
