Red face Alternative OS

Ok just a blonde question

Is it possible to build your own operating system or do you have to have Win/Unix/Mac etc?

It is possible.. just be careful of violating patents and copyright law.. and you will need a LOT of time, as well as a LOT of help!!!!

Can it be done, yes. Is it easy, NO. but there are various OS's EVERYWHERE. Each piece of electronic equipment runs on some kind of OS, You just don't notice.

OMG I wasn't even considering building one myself! It just seems that whatever OS people have there are good things and bad things about it so the perfect OS would have a bit of all of them in it... I guess?

Hah... so my dishwasher really does have a mind of its own then? That explains a lot

I think I will wait for HP to bring it out preloaded on their comps... I would love to have a play with it and learn stuff but I don't have time

Wohooo. YES!!! It can be done. However I too once had a vision where I would make my own OS and it didn't go that far. You are far better off joining and existing OpenSource OS development (most probably unix/linux) and starting from their. Plus why do we need another OS on the planet?

WebServices is the way forward, make a Web Browser based OS that can run applications remotely from backend linux boxes using java applletts, x11 and ssh. I'm sure that could be succesful. You Docs and Apps, anywhere any time!

you should try using solaris. It isnt exactly building a OS from scratch but you can alter just about everything on it to match the needs of your work environment. My dads company and they configure it to being secure as in no body else can use it and they customized it exaclty to thier needs.

The human ego will never disappear as long as desire remains present. Humans will continue to fight to fulfill their bodies desires and it will never end. At this rate there is no future.

This is fascinating. So would having a 'unique' OS provide total security? Particularly if it was a web based like Rob said. Could you prevent someone putting malware on your computers simply by having an OS that was not compatible with their code? Not sure if I am explaining what I'm thinking very well

can you configure it so that there's no way of catching a virus on it?
