| Re "security update for windows media format runtime 9 and 11" this would require you to have WM 9 or 11 installed to be able to update it. If memory serves me right XP SP2 comes with WM 8 preinstalled. Downloading & installing 9 or 11 should allow you run the updates. Peronally I'm not impressed with 11 which is in Vista, it works fine just seems to do strange things with the database. Actually not sure if it's available for XP, there was a version 10 for XP SP2, that was similar to 11 without the problems. |

| Okay, your problem is with automatic updates. Let's look at a few things. 1) Can you use updates via the web (IE6/7 using Windows or Microsoft update)? 2) Have you verified the services needed are running? If no to either (that is if you cannot use windows update and have not checked the services) let's do that now. 1) Click on Start. 2) Click on RUN. 3) Type " SERVICES.MSC ". 4) Hit the <ENTER> key. This will launch the Services Management Console. 5) Look for the following Service: Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS). This service needs to be STARTED in order to use automatic updates either via the control panel, or the web. 6) If it is not started, Select the service and DOUBLE-CLICK it. This will open the properties. 7) Verify the startup type is AUTOMATIC (change it if needed). 8) Click on START. 9) Close out of all of that and you should be okay to give it another go. Let us know if any of this helps. I've seen several instances where BITS gets turned off, and even set to disabled. It is MANDATORY for Automatic/Windows/Microsoft update to work. If that doesn't help, we can look at some other things.

| I cancelled mine, I have no mp3 player, nor do I d/load music so I don't deem it necessary, as for SP2, a friend had a helluva lot of problems with that, then found it a hard job to unistall. |

| Hmm could be a problem with the SP that is still blocking your access to Updates. MS admitted that IE8 blocks access to updates. Who knows how much of the code is shared there. IE8 balks at Windows Update
