G'day...it's Autumn in Australia...summer played hide 'n seek, colder days now..... I hav xp p4 2 gb 40 gb etc etc
and I've lost my mind trying to get a dvd to burn...
hav 'power producer'...also win media 11...also..nero...also every other damn free program...cdburnerxp...and..
vlc ( incase I don't have a decoder) ..so..
..can download a simpsons short movie to hard disc...when i click on file a small window comes up, either quicktime or other player...the movie runs at a quicker rate with no sound?, (speakers do work)
so then I try to burn it to disc anyway,, it won't burn..in fact it (win media player) checks the D drive and ejects the disc....tells me to load a empty disc which i do and it looks at it then ejects!!....this is driving me nuts..
do i hav to 'format' the disc 1st?..why can't these things be simple????

I have played a cartoon in the disc D drive...works ..sound and vision....
I keep thinking i need a 'decoder'..but the retailer (second hand John)..says I don't.. says ''it should work'' ...yea right...
i have a good mind to get a refund, only my receipt got caught in wash..
now i only have his word on warranty etc...aarrgghh!!...woe is anyone who goes thru this shit!. HELP..

still trying to burn.....now a friend tells me to use Nero and burn it as a data disc...he also tells me that my blank dvds: -+ R discs can't be used for cd - songs etc....great ! ...I thought they could be used for cd/dvd...
apparently not...so, tonight i'll try the 'data disc option'...and let u all know, cause i'm sure some will be interested...and tomorrow i'll buy some blank cds..

Okay, firstly can you provide details of the make and model of the drive please. And no you do not need to format the disc first. You should be able to record directly onto the disk. I think maybe you have a driver problem, either that or your drive is faulty. I cannot think of any other reason as to why you would be having this trouble. Oh and please use **** or if you feel the need to swear even with words like you used i.e. shi* its just nice for the younger members of this forum.

from memory... the drive is a CDROMPioneer dvd-r, dvr-109...

I just tried to use the Nero 'Backup' option (INSTEAD OF THE 'BURN' OR 'MAKE' OPTIONS)on the Simpsons clip and some other text documents....
the backup starts and the files get compressed...
but as soon as it starts the BURN process..it fails..."the disc is not a writable CD''..and aborts..hohum..yawn..
the discs are blank new DVD-R and DVD+R..tried both.....
still have to buy some blank CDs. (must get some tomorrow)
the princess managed to download/burn/make/copy/backup (wat's the diff?) a group of photos to a DVD-R ...so they're on a disc now.

Any ideas?...thanks

IT'S WORKING!....A friend came over and we went thru it step by step, and although I'm sure it was the same procedure, it worked as a DATA Disc burn....so, baffled as I still am, I'm relieved and trust no-one else goes thru this little(big) nightmare..
