| Hello freeon, Firstly welcome back to CompuForums. Remember that if you can't help us by making a couple of posts that are not related to your own problems we cannot help you. These do not need to be technical at all. Do you have a Windows XP CD-ROM or a recovery disk?

| Start the xp cd and use the recovery console. Then, use the option to fix the master boot record (FIXMBR) and the Fix Boot (FIXBOOT) commands. You can type help for the list of commands when the console fully loads (DOS PROMPT). Note, be wary of the FIXMBR, if your machine has a dual-boot setup. To see the list of options for the recovery console: Microsoft Corporation If this fixes the boot problem, I recommend you schedule a thorough scan of the hard drive. In My Computer, Right-Click the C drive, and choose properties. Goto the TOOLS tab, and click on the button for "Check Now" in the Error Checking section. Add a check mark to both fields. You will need to restart your computer to allow it to do a good scan of the hard drive. This will take some time, so plan accordingly. this last part can be done in the recovery console using the chkdsk option. |

| If this is the ntoskrnl.exe file I just read about a kind of similar problem in the Security forum. I had a look in my system32 folder and the file is in there. I then had a look in Windows/Service Pack Files/i386 and ntoskrnl.exe is in there too. Now, I am posing the question to those of you who are not blonde like me... If the ntoskrnl.exe file has gone missing from the system32 folder would it be possible to copy the one in the Service Pack Files into the system32 folder? Would it work?

| i would suggest formating your hdd only because it deletes any corrupt files and then reinstalls new files that came with the disk that arent damaged. that is your best bet. good luck!

| I have been using SP3 RC2 and its worked fine for me. However I would say the bare minimum to use would be service pack 2. Alot of new M$ programs and updates will not work unless you have service pack 2 installed. |
