Hello freeon,
Firstly welcome back to CompuForums. Remember that if you can't help us by making a couple of posts that are not related to your own problems we cannot help you. These do not need to be technical at all.

Do you have a Windows XP CD-ROM or a recovery disk?

Start the xp cd and use the recovery console. Then, use the option to fix the master boot record (FIXMBR) and the Fix Boot (FIXBOOT) commands. You can type help for the list of commands when the console fully loads (DOS PROMPT). Note, be wary of the FIXMBR, if your machine has a dual-boot setup.
To see the list of options for the recovery console: Microsoft Corporation

If this fixes the boot problem, I recommend you schedule a thorough scan of the hard drive. In My Computer, Right-Click the C drive, and choose properties. Goto the TOOLS tab, and click on the button for "Check Now" in the Error Checking section. Add a check mark to both fields. You will need to restart your computer to allow it to do a good scan of the hard drive. This will take some time, so plan accordingly.

this last part can be done in the recovery console using the chkdsk option.

Fix boot did noting and fixmbr says:computer appears to have a non-standard or invalide master boot record May damage your partition tables.this could cause all the partitions to become inaccessible.Should i still try it or is there any other options.

Non standard _OR_ invalid. I'm leaning toward the invalid. You never stated if this was a dual boot system. But then, looking back, I didn't ask it. I was thinking it.

If the system is dual boot, don't use it. Or you'll need to reinstall the boot loader for your dual boot setup. Also, if you have custom partitions created (swap partition, data partition separate from the system) But if it's XP only, then FIXMBR.

Here is the MS info (typicaly MS, not very specific):
Fixmbr

Repairs the master boot record of the boot disk. The fixmbr command is only available when you are using the Recovery Console

fixmbr [device_name]

Parameter

device_name

The device (drive) on which you want to write a new master boot record. The name can be obtained from the output of the map command. An example of a device name is:

\Device\HardDisk0.

Example

The following example writes a new master boot record to the device specified:

fixmbr \Device\HardDisk0

Note

If you do not specify a device_name, a new master boot record will be written to the boot device, which is the drive on which your primary system is loaded.

If an invalid or nonstandard partition table signature is detected, you will be prompted whether you want to continue. If you are not having problems accessing your drives, you should not continue. Writing a new master boot record to your system partition could damage your partition tables and cause your partitions to become inaccessible.

If this is the ntoskrnl.exe file I just read about a kind of similar problem in the Security forum. I had a look in my system32 folder and the file is in there. I then had a look in Windows/Service Pack Files/i386 and ntoskrnl.exe is in there too. Now, I am posing the question to those of you who are not blonde like me... If the ntoskrnl.exe file has gone missing from the system32 folder would it be possible to copy the one in the Service Pack Files into the system32 folder? Would it work?

i would suggest formating your hdd only because it deletes any corrupt files and then reinstalls new files that came with the disk that arent damaged. that is your best bet.
good luck!

I have been using SP3 RC2 and its worked fine for me. However I would say the bare minimum to use would be service pack 2. Alot of new M$ programs and updates will not work unless you have service pack 2 installed.
