windows xp pro just hanged when booted.. Just shows background but doesn't log in.

Hey guys! I have some poblems lately with my windows xp pro lately.... Whenever I try to log into windows, it just show my background wallpaper but nothing else is loading... just froze there. I tried to re-install the windows using the CD but it does the same thing...

I also tried thc chdsk /r at dos prompt and stops at 50% completed.... any ideas?

This could be down to a number of reasons. but it is quite likely to be down to a hard drive or memory problem. How old is the computer - and who made it?

I just found out that i had to reformat the hard drive and now my pc is working again.... just another question with regard to internet connection. I have bought a HP compaq presario B1900 and it has windows vista business installed. I just can't find the function key to enable wireless capability.... At the moment, I can't get connected on wireless... Thanks!
