Default How to block specific Windows update

I have a Widnows Vista (home edtion) laptop. One of the Windows updates causes the problem that prevent web browser (both IE and FireFox) going any web sites with the message "the webpate could not be found...". I did system restore (restored the system back to the stage what Windows update hadn't applied yet), the problem would be solved. Right now, I turned off the Windows updates. I would like to know how to block the specific Windows updates so I can turn the Windows updates on while blocking the one which is causing the prolem. Thanks.

I know how todo this using Windows XP, but not on Vista, although if you are using XP you can remove alot of the awful features using XPLite including the normally annoying and unremovable Windows Updates Applications.

ermmm, i am not 100% sure if you can do that, by default windows update is evil, manually selecting and installing updates tends to be better.

I recommend using the web based update (not any auto-update). Just go out the 2nd Tuesday of each month and get your desired updates. This has several advantages. 1) you are not relying on autoupdate (which can put you in your current fix) 2) you can get more than just the CRITICAL updates, which Autoupdate does. 3) You can "hide" updates you don't' want.

Point 3 is the one in question here. You can tell Windows Update site to not show you that update. This is handy if you get a bad update like you have listed. I have had to do this with several patches for XP, because they caused other major problems.

To do this, start IE, and go to the Windows Update stie (Tools, Windows Update). Tell it to check for updates (It will roll the status line a few minutes). Then follow the link for VIEW AVAILABLE UPDATES. Remove the check mark for the ones you don't want NOW. To hide it, uncheck it, then RIGHT-CLICK on the update and chose HIDE. You will be prompted to Continue. Do so and follow the prompts. Read each dialog carefully.

On the main Windows Update page, you can always chose to Restore Hidden updates. This is handy if they decide to fix their bad patch, and you find you need it.
