Default Have Windows XP but should I upgrade to Window's Vista

I have a new laptop from HP that has Window's HP on it but I got the UPGRADE of Windows vista Media sent to me with the HP drivers, etc. I haven't installed it yet as I was afraid to and not really sure how to go about it anyhow. I had one person tell me not to do it as it would only slow my laptop down to put the new version on it, others tell me it will only enhance my laptop. I don't know which to do. Does anyone have any recommendations? Should i install it over the XP or just leave well enough alone and keep running the XP? All I use my laptop for really is the word applications and on occassion I use it for internet when I need to but other than that, I do most of my other work on my desktop. Plus if I do install it, is it easy to do over the XP system? thanks for all the advice in advance! I have the HP pavillion DV9005 laptop.

Hi again elicia,

Nice to see you here back again, and I hope you can visit here more often in the future.

I do not suggest installing your copy of Vista right now - the learning curve isn't worth it for the few benefits it provides. Plus getting drivers for many new devices you may purchase won't be easy right now. Vista will also mean your laptop will run slower than with XP on there.

HP sent me a cd with the drivers as well along with the Windows vista Media version but I was still unsure whether to install or just leave well enough alone. Like i said someone else told me it would slow me down as well but I have also heard so many good things about vista I wasn't sure whether to try it or not. So your recommendation is definitely to leave well enough alone? like the old saying goes, if it ain't broke don't fix it? Thanks again for your input!

Yes, I really don't suggest installing Vista unless you need any of the features that it offers. And as you said, the old saying goes, "if it ain't broke don't fix it" is true with computers.

I agree with Ash, Windows Vista has a lot of bugs in it. A lot of software will not work on Windows Vista like drivers, printer and so on.

thanks everyone. I guess I will just put the CD's back then and save them with my others. the ones HP sent me were UPGRADE utility for window's vista and Window's vista home premium express upgrade. But like I said I haven't a clue what to do to even install them so best left alone is probably safer than sorry. Again thanks for the advice! I sincerely appreciate it all! elicia

Eventually Vista will be the wave of the future - But - Until they come out with either SP1 or SP2 then would be a good time to consider Vista.

vista wont be the wave of the future it takes way to much resources, its quite sad that thats all Microsoft could come up with after about 10+ year development period

Why don't you design your own OS since you seem to be so qualified - First off - Everyone is different (duh) - And if we all liked the same thing then why would we need this forum - Microsoft is still and will alwaye be the innovator of the future - Others can only buld on their platform to keep up!!! - Forgive me for sounding a bit harsh but complaining about issues such as Vista is normal - Change is good..................

I have vista on my laptop and its great. Annoying things are that its not compatible with several of my programs like RPG Maker XP.
I have a very fast laptop, so the speed thing doesn't bother me.
I also like the layout of Vista, but the main reason I got it was for security.
I kept my desktop on XP though for compatibility issues

I'm using Vista on my desktop, i updated and had to buy Windows, i was hesitant but theres was no point buying XP because Vista would eventually take over.
I had a few troubles in the begining with drivers ect, but i found all the drivers and so far so good.
I enjoy using it, its familiar but differant at the same time, not to mention Sexy. When i use XP on my laptop... its... ugly and i only use it at work now and sit in front of my Sexy Vista at home.
One problem i did have was trying to play Monopoly Tycoon, the game is about 10years old and wont run at all...Oh well.

Default QUestion about taking Microsoft word trial off my laptop

My laptop came with a free 60 day trial of microsoft office/word but the trial is now up. It doesn't work right, everytime you even try to open it it asks for the new verification key which of course I don't have and then it won't shut down. I personally just use the microsoft works program but wondered if I could remove the microsoft Office program without any hassle to any of the other programs on the laptop. it is just a trial version and like i said even to open it is a huge undertaking. I'm not sure why it won't open and shut properly.
As for the vista, i think I will just stick with the XP for now. I seen a version of vista the other day and overall it won't do anything for me that makes me want to rush out and have it installed on my laptop so until that day comes or until I need it, I think I will just continue with the XP. Thanks again for everyone's advice!

You should be able to remove it using the regular Add or Remove Programs option in XP [Start >> Control Panel >> Add or Remove Programs].
You can download a free office suite that does almost everything Office can from:
OpenOffice.org: Home

Thank you for the info on the website! I will definitely check that out! so you don't think it will hurt any other programs to remove the trial version off my computer. Like I said it's not like I can use it, everytime I open it, it freezes up. as for the vista, I think I am sticking with the XP. So far I'm just as happy with it and my daughter's boyfriend came by with his new laptop and showed me his with vista and I wasn't overly impressed, at least not enough to make me want to take my laptop in for a overhaul to have XP removed and vista added back on! THANKS AGAIN FOR THE WEBSITE INFO!!! that's great!
