Default XP PRO x64

Under the system requirements it has this for processors:

Supported processors: AMD Athlon 64, AMD Opteron, Intel Xeon with Intel Extended Memory 64 Technology (EM64T) support, Intel Pentium 4 with Intel EM64T support

I have a Intel Core 2 Duo, can I install xp pro x64 with this processor?

I'm not completely sure [but I expect it can].

However, the performance improvement from doing so is negligible, plus it is quite hard to get 64bit drivers for all of your devices. Do you have anything you want to install that especially requires XP x64?

Hi. You can install XP Pro x64 on a C2D machine, but why? There is no reason to have a 64-bit OS for regular computers--the advantages of a 64-bit OS over current 32-bit OS's is that a 64-bit OS can use/allocate mass amounts of system memory--I think something like 128 GB of system RAM is the limit. But Windows typically doesn't recognize anything over 3GB, so it's stupid. Generally it's mostly bragging rights to have a functioning computer running Win XP x64. There are no benefits--it won't make your computer any faster, and finding 64-bit drivers for your hardware is a nightmare! I was looking into this too, and installed Win XP Pro x64, and there's no difference between the 32-bit OS except my wireless adapter wouldn't work (no 64-bit drivers...). I'd advise you to save your time and your money and just go x86 if you want to use XP Pro. But that's just my humble opinion.

Actualy, I must make a point here. Intel Core 2 Duo = 2 32-Bit processors.
2 32-Bit processors DO NOT make a 64-Bit processor. The installation may believe it is 64-Bit, but when you do any task that is CPU or RAM intensive, you will find that you have a BSOD due to either PAGE_FAULT_IN_NON_PAGED_AREA or a NT OS Kernel pannic. I strongly advise against installing.

Intel Core 2 Duo Conroe cores are true 64-bit processors using the Intel EM64T technology. The problems you state are due to problems with the architecture not delivering 64-bit performance in a 64-bit OS environment, not because the C2D's aren't 64-bit. They are 64-bit, not 32-bit. Obviously 2x32-bit processors aren't 64-bit. If that were the case, then AMD would have been marketing their dual-core processors as 128-bit processors instead of 64-bit.

Either way, it's a good reason to not go with a 64-bit OS just yet...

First off Em64T does mean that you have 64 bit compatabilty - You can check this very easily by going to CPUZ.com and running this and it will tell you if you are indeed 64bit compatable - As far as loading your OS in 64bit......I would have to agree with Ash in that you will find it very hard to find all of the drivers you will need and above all it is unnecessary.

Yes, the c2d conroe cores are 64-bit. The problem that the previous person mentioned with conroe cores and a 64-bit OS are due to more than 3GB of physical RAM being used--because the computer/OS cannot properly allocate/map the RAM--so anytime you do RAM-intensive things, you get errors and BSOD's--this is most commonly documented in computers with certain sound cards, but primarily any C2D's using 4GB of RAM with a 64-bit MS OS. It is not because the CPU's are 32-bit.

Given the current state of awful 64-bit support by both Operating System manufacturers and hardware manufacturers, I'd say a wait-period is necessary. It's stupid--one would think that since MS decided to re-work their current OS and release a new 64-bit OS, there wouldn't be all of these problems. But big surprise...
