Hi there randomagain!
Firstly, welcome to CompuForums. It's great to have you on board, and I hope that you continue to post here even after this issue has been resolved for you. Also it would be great if you could add yourself to our member map.

Firstly, are you saying that you can't connect to your printer or external modem, or the printer goes through a serial/modem port? Also the model numbers and manufacturers of the equipment affected by this issue would be useful.

Ah OK, its a HP1010 series printer connected via USB

Its can't seem to install the drivers, it back rolls and says try again later, but it just does the same thing

Also the modem is USB connected, however I have to be honest I am dubious wether this works as I would assume that a power light would come on when I plug it in but it doesn't.

You probably want to see if the modem works by plugging it into another computer.

As for the printer you'll have to get updated drivers for it. Do you know if your computer is running the 32-bit or 64-bit edition of Vista?

I'll try and find out where you can download Vista drivers for your printer [HP LaserJet 1010, right?].
However, right now, the HP Website is displaying "server busy" error messages. I guess everybody else wants to get Vista drivers for their HP hardware.

It's better to know that the hardware works before you install it on Vista

Well in my opinion, right now Vista is a nightmare. I personally won't be getting it, and sending your PC back and buying one with XP preloaded [which will no doubt be cheaper - and if it has XP Professional or XP Media Center Edition pre-loaded, you can get a free upgrade from Microsoft [just pay the shipping], as long as you buy it before March 15th.

HP do not currently have a print driver for your printer [by the looks of it, the majority of their printers don't have a driver for Vista yet].
However, you might want to try the XP driver. It may or may not work - if it says it fails the first time and asks you if it wants to try again, try again. If it fails the second time, then it's highly likely the driver won't work.

If you can confirm that the modem is working and give me the make/model number I

You mention that you are using a HP 1010. If you mean HP Laserjet 1010, take a look at the thread below. This person supposedly was able to get his Laserjet 1010 working with Vista at least on a basic level. This might suffice until HP releases official Vista drivers for your printer.

Thanks for the advice, I had a sneeky idea this would happen.

To salvage the situation I am planning to switch my XP with my vista. :p

Then at least there is more chance of everything working.
