| I have a 1 Year old Acer laptop computer. It has a 60 Gb hard-drive that is partitioned into two equal partitions. I have Windows XP installed on the first partition and I wanted to install Windows 98 on the second partition. So I put in my Windows 98 setup CD and it installs its files and then it restarts the computer. Once it has rebooted it says it's searching for plug and play devices and then a blue screen appears and says there is some error, so I press a key and then the computer freezezz up. I retried installing the OS many times but the same thing happens. What can I do? I really want to get windows 98 on this computer. Thanks! |

| Hi there, I have not used 98 in a long time, but I think that these problems could be due to the fact that Windows 98 is designed for much older hardware. However, you might want to try running it in a virtual machine - which means running Windows 98 inside XP. Microsoft's virtual machine software, Virtual PC 2004 has been released free. To get it, visit http://www.microsoft.com/windows/vir...loads/sp1.mspx. Let us know if you can run 98 inside a virtual machine or not.

| www.vmware.com is the solution - free virtualisation. however performance for gaming is lacking. if the second partition is a NTFS partition then it wont load windows 98, as it needs to be fat 32, it can be converted to ntfs once installed. make sure the partition is fat 32 and write back.

| I would suggest that you use Microsoft VirtualPC - VMware installs a load of laggy services by default. You can remove them, but VirtualPC is easier and you don't need to fill in a long form to get a [free] registration key.
