I haven't used FreeBSD, but Linux is great and the support for hardware and the friendlyness ofthe users is great.

Try Ubuntu if you are new:

For beginners, definitely Linux. FreeBSD is great and all so long as it is configured correctly. FreeBSD is one of those operating systems that is great under right configuration and runs like Windows ME (Mistake Edition) when installed and left unconfigured. You`ll have to know how to get around the OS in order to configure it not to mention there`s a lot of coding involved.

Now Linux on the other hand can be installed and left unconfigured without too much of a problem. All in all, both Linux and FreeBSD are great. But the question is -- is the end user advanced enough for FreeBSD?

well, you could try PC-BSD, its basically Free-BSD but optimized for unexperienced users, with KDE pre configured to a high standard.

FreeBSD is great and outperforms Linux (proven statement) in multi-tasking and high-processing situations. That's why it's a great solutions for operating systems on servers hosting sites with high-traffic [that use PHP and MySQL databases].

I just read the other night that FreeBSD runs better and performs better than CentOS (searched Google for FreeBSD compared to CentOS) and on a lot of sites this statement is made.

Linux is a great OS don't take me wrong...it's still new technology and a lot of tweaks need to be made to it. It CAN perform just as well as Unix. Unix just has been around a lot longer (since the 1960's) and is a bit more stable and doesn't really require much tweaking anymore.

IMO I think Linux is good for more-over gaming and stuff like that.
If you're going to use FreeBSD on a computer than I really suggest downloading and trying PC-BSD - very stable, no problems, and very fast.
