ya thats true of everyone. after all apple stole their ideas also. from xerox was it? the idea of a mouse? i believe xerox originally came up with that idea, and good old steve took that. haha microsoft merely stole from thieves. no one but open source is clean. however "bullying" tactics aren't illegal, how ever unsavory they may be. extortion is, but quicker production of an innovative product isnt.

I would not say that Windows is a bad product. Although Windows is is slower, and not as efficient at Ubuntu/Linux, it is WAAAAY more streamlined and easier to use for the average user.

Take just logging into your PC as an example. When you log into to a Linux box, say, a vanilla install of Ubuntu, you skip through about 5 different programs and the screen flashes through 3 or four different colors before the desktop manager loads. Kubuntu us a little better, but it is still not pleasing to the user. It leaves one with the impression that Ubuntu is not well put together.

Windows and OSX on the other hand, have better desktop integration. It just depends on what you like. Until Linux devs can come together and integrate, Linux will always be the third hand. Hardcore Linux users see this as an advantage, but I do not. While there is a place for tinkering, it is about time that a finished, polished, workable, desktop environment be developed for Linux. Ubuntu has made great strides in this regard, but still has a way to go.

It is likely that Mac is going to gain a LOT of market share over Microsoft because the average user is waking up to the better quality contained in OSX. Well, at least its BSD unix...

I haven't had this server for 200 days. But I assume that you had yours for longer.

I was running kubuntu for a small time after my hard drive ate itself.

I want to load Ubuntu or Kubuntu back on it as I got to get it running in the next week or so, but I have no idea how to use the shell form of Unix which puts a dent in things (as you're probably aware). Also, nobody's been able to get my damn ATI Radeon Rage 9250 video car to work with it

EDIT:
Anybody wanna explain to me (or try to explain to me) what the difference between kubuntu and ubuntu is besides one is blue and one is brown??

Kubuntu is KDE-based, Ubuntu is Gnome-based.

They are two different desktop environments for Linux. Basically, if Linux itself was the engine of a car, and the X Window manager was the windscreen, then you can either choose KDE or Gnome as your steering wheel, transmission, etc.

Gahhhhh, you have no idea how much I've heard that answer, don't understand it, and hate it. "One's KDE and one's Genome" - I think Kubuntu is the KDE version...doesn't mean a whole lot to me.

How are they two different desktop environments? Their desktop/program array is exactly the same, no?

On the other hand, I LOVE your analogy .

So linux is the "heart" - and KDE or Gnome is the "dressing?" - but like, what kind of steering wheel and transmission are we talking about? Are we talking about a better transmission, or are we talking about a 5 speed manual vs a 2 speed power glide racing auto transmission? Is it simply interaction, or is it function? I guess the big Q is, where would Ubuntu be better than Kubuntu and vice versa.

Frankly I've been trying to find the most stable Linux Distro for a "daily usage OS" - and I guess Kubuntu is the one...one guy suggested Fidora but from what I've heard of that, it's not practical for a daily usage OS, especially the less you know about unix shell commands (which I know none of).

No their desktop program array isn't the same. KDE is set-up more like a MAC and KDE is more like Windows. It is interaction and Function I personally prefer KDE, but that is just my opinion.

So it's just the interface? Or is the functionality effected at all?
