| It would depend on how old your laptop is. Generally anything 3 years old or newer will allow you to boot from an external HD [boot from USB]. It wouldn't be too hard to install, when installing just select your external HD. Then when you want to boot Ubuntu, go to your boot menu and select "Boot from USB Device" or similar.

| A question, related to this topic: If running Ubuntu Live directly off the CD, can't the information or settings be save to a designated Windows file or jump drive with FAT, and accessed at a later time when the Live disk is ran again? Also, wouldn't this eliminate the need for using an external device to install/boot? |
