Default Favourite Unix Distrobution

We have already seen the favourite Linux distro thread, so why not have a unix one?

Vote for your favourite Unix Distro, mine is OSX by far but my second has to be Soalris and FreeBSD. You may select more than one option

I'm no Mac expert, but I'm pretty sure that it's based on BSD, which was based on UNIX. Could be wrong though.

I chose Linux and FreeBSD. And yes, the Mac OS is Unix based. Funny enough, the Mac OS isn`t like any other thing out there, although it is technically Unix based. The Mac OS is a creature of its own. :p

yes, it is a creature of its own, but it is actually still BSD based, so is solaris, even though the operating systems have some vast differences.

OS 9 isn't really Unix based, OS X is. OS X is when apples fearless leader "Steve Jobs" decided to bring one of his old projects "NeXTStep" and re-implement it.

well, NeXTStep is a rather interesting thing, It was noticed how it almost failed apple back in the 90s when NT emerged as the desktop leader. It almost ended with apple being bought, but they struggled on. Although I thought OS9 was also Unix based, Ill need to go and check it out. Ohh how I wish I lived and was old enough to understand the Unix wars of 1985 lol.

trust me, if the linux/bsd wars are any clue, you really don't want to be old enough to remember! XD No worries though, we all make mistakes, but if i'm wrong, don't be afraid to point it out, because i make them too

Besides, if you want to know how bad they where, we still have part of em going on when you look at Emacs vs. vi (no i'm not asking wich is better so please don't start that topic ))

Open Source

With its open-source core based on FreeBSD 5.0 and the Mach 3.0 microkernel, Mac OS X is the best Macintosh operating system ever for UNIX users. With built-in support for the X Window System, IPv6, Kerberos integration, and added POSIX, Linux, and System V API support, Mac OS X easily runs your favorite UNIX software. With a CUPS-based print and fax engine, plus a suite of command-line and Python interfaces to Apple's Quartz graphics, it is easy to develop full-featured PDF workflows. Mac OS X even automounts Macintosh, Windows, and UNIX file servers directly in the Finder

from the front page of the apple developer homepage. It is tied from BSD source, read it for yourself...

also, you might want to look up A/UX apples first try at a unix type OS, they were trying to get into government systems contracts, but they could not because the federal government required UNIX compatibility wich classic Mac OS's could not provide. Microsoft tried to do the same thing with there unix, but then they reverted to OS/2 - NT software wich merely emulated the required systems.

I've done my research, now do yours.

Wot i just say? OS X has no relation to Berkely software!! OS X has the Mach kernel, yeah, but most stuff is from NeXTStep! :-)

much better, but os9 and prior aren't related at all to berkely or next-step at all, and nextstep was built off a berkely base, but os x is upgraded to bsd5, so yah, they related. Its a common mistake, i don't hold it against ya

I prefer Linux, specifically Ubuntu. I hope one day everyone will be using some sort of Unix. Or, Microsoft better start working on Windows!
