Default Wireless security

How can I secure my wireless network?
I don't want just anyone to be able to log in and use my internet connection as well as access my files on my laptop.

Are there any basic procedures I need to follow to secure my wireless network?

Well on my network I enabled WPA-PSK encryption, although WEP and MAC ADDRESS filtering are other security means, it so say in your OS handbook or Access Point manual how todo this

MAC FIltering is a must. I'll have to check back exactly what I use and post back.

USe the highest WEP you have (Wep2) if you can., I agree with Prince, filter by MAC addresses, allow only your wireless devices. Change the default password on your wireless router.

Each router has a host of options, Read your manua!

If you know for sure that you only want your wireless devices to access the network (that is, you won't be bringing in friends laptops...) then make sure you block all MAC addresses that are not yours.

Also, make sure your network name, ID and other broadcast bits of information are set to HIDDEN and PRIVATE. Don't let the neighbors even know you have a wireless network if possible.

Theft of services (by mooching your wireless connection) is not only illegal, it is a good way for you to get in some serious trouble (by others illegal activities such as child porn, using your connection for hacking, spamming, music downloads (RIAA)). The authorities can trace the connection back to you. Don't be the one who takes the fall for what the kid down the street does through your connection.
