Default WiFi problem

I have an Aspire 5612ZWLMi running Vista and Firefox browser. I have no problems connecting to my home network or to commercial 'hotspot' providers. However when I try to connect to 'security enabled' sites in pubs or on campsites using the given password, I end up getting a 'limited connectivity' message and appear to be connected to the network but cannot get internet access. Strangely I have no problem on friends' home setups even when security protected.
This happens even with excellent signal strength. When I speak to the operators they tell me that most people get a connection but some don't. This leads me to wonder if it is a problem with the settings on my laptop.
Can anyone advise please?
