This morning I tried to set up a new wireless router (EchoLife HG520s) that I got after joining TalkTalk Broadband.
I started attaching it to my pc, then found out it will only work if the included ADSL cable goes through a microfilter from a phone socket, into the router. My internet comes through a cable instead (not sure what the technical term is) but I gathered that I wasn't going to get it to work. I took out all the cables I'd put in it, and started to reattach my old Netgear RP614 Router. I set it up exactly as it was for the last 5 months (working almost flawlessly) but now there is no internet. Previously, I had a cable from my wall going into a "ntl:home broadband internet" box, then some ethernet attaching that to my router, then more ethernet from the router to my computer and to a home plug for my xbox live. Anyone know why now the internet doesn't work through my router? (to get onto the forums im bypassing the router all-together, ethernet straight from the internet box to the pc.) |

Hello Kryptark,
Firstly - welcome to CompuForums. It's good to have you here and we hope you enjoy our community. Here we can help you for free, but in return you must help us also. You can do this by either by helping other people before you request help for yourself, or posting in The Lounge. If neither of these appeal to you, then consider becoming a Premium Member. These simple things do not take much of your time, considering we spend a lot of time helping people like you for free, and due to this being abused we now ask for a little of your own time. If you cannot do either of these, then we will not be able to fix your computer problems. Do you have a BT Phone Line? Your ADSL modem will have to be plugged into this. You can then plug the router into the modem.

Ok I will look around and help other people - and I do have a modem but it's 8 metres away from my computer and through 2 doors (measured it this morning) and the wires aren't long enough. I would buy an extension but that would be really inconvienient, so I was going to fix my old internet then ring TalkTalk to see if they can put a phone socket into the pc room.

You will either have to get TalkTalk to move the socket or extend it - I also escaped the evils of Virgin Media last year and had to use a phone extension [you'll have to get a fairly good quality one to maintain speeds] to go to my router modem as there are no power sockets where the main phone socket is.
If you do have power near your phone line, you might want to look into get an ADSL router+modem. I brought this one and I'm really pleased with the quality - I seldom have to reboot it and the wireless signal strength and quality is good even going through thick walls and into the garden. Thanks if I can't get this router working I'll probably end up with that one.
But in the mean time, do you have any tips on how to get my RP614 back up-and-running while I wait for TalkTalk to move the socket?? |

You'll basically want this sort of setup:
NTL/Virgin coax cable > NTL Modem > Router [internet port]

Forget that I bought a USB adaptor anf got my internet working through my new router, but now its gone again :S
It happened after I put in the CD I got with te router, the part after it was "making the router wireless" |

You usually don't need to use the CD that comes with the router. Just connect to it, set a password and your internet login, and connect to it again with the password.

Last night I rang the TalkTalk helpline, and after a very long discussion I found out the router HAS to be wired up to the pc before it can go wireless. Therefore I dug up a massive modem cable, and connected the router to it and the pc. My USB Adapter and Wii now have a great signal from it.
Thanks for all your Help, Kryptark |
