Default Really did it this time

OK--so i decided to add a external hard drive and move things over to it from my C: drive.
Well, I think i moved too much(probably all my drivers) and couldnt connect to my boadband router. So I pulled out a USB cable and connected to router and loaded drivers from disk.
Now my computer doent show that it has a Ethernet card at all, and I cant use my wireless router.
I know I need to load the netXtreme gigabit drivers from the internet, but in the device manager I do not even show that I have a network card attached.

How can i get it to show up so I can select it and update drivers??
Do I have to open the box, yank it out and plug it back in so the PC will recognize it??

HP Compaq d530SFF
Windows XP loaded (was XP pro but I didnt notice that until it was too late)
****Is this a problem that I went from XP Pro---> XP?

Hello drdoof,
Firstly - welcome to CompuForums. We provide our computer help for free, so we would highly appreciate it if you could help us. You can do this by answering other people's questions, or if you are not so technically-minded, post in our general lounge forum. Alternatively you can purchase a premium membership to help contribute to the rising running costs of this site. If you can't help us then we can't help you.

What sort of router are you using [do you mean modem?], and what make and model is your computer? And are you connecting to your router using wireless or Ethernet?

Thanks for getting to me so fast.
The router is a Linksys.
Computer is HP Compaq d530 SFF
s/n USU40404WT
p/n DS170US#ABA

I always ran fine with just the cord from my cable modem to the PC and then the blue ethernet cord to the Linksys.
After windows install i had to run a USB from cable modem to PC so Pc WOULD RECOGNIZE IT AND I COULD LOAD DRIVERS. nOW pc WILL NOT HAVE INTERNET IF i DISCONNECT usb FROM CABLE MODEM TO pc. (SOORY i WASNT LOOKING AS I TYPED)

Do you have any more specific info on what router you have?
I would suggest that, if possible, you connect the modem to the router and then connect your PC to the router - are there any other computers on the network?

then what you should do is if you happen to have another computer or a freinds computer, then find the make and model of your router, go on the internet, find a driver install for your modem, router, download the installer and then burn it onto a disc or onto a flash drive "stick". then go to the computer that cant get internet or just wont connect and install the driver manually. if this doesnt work post that and we will try to help more. but i do believe from my experience that that is your best bet. i installed a new ethernet card becuase my old one was junky and all messed up. but i couldnt get on the internet w/o it obviuosly, so what i did was use my moms laptop, downloaded the driver of the ethernet card(only cuz it didnt come with an installation CD, what a jip right?) and then whent back to my old computer with the new ethernet card, installed the driver that was on my USB stick and everything worked perfectly. problem solved. but like i said, if not the case, please post
