I'm doing a network for a small business. All the computers are on a domain and the domain controller is running on the server. I'm also trying to setup Active Directory so that users can login to their account at any of the six workstations in the building. However, for some reason I'm only getting ~46kb/s transfer rates across the network which is obviously pathetic. Consequently, Active Directory is impossible to do right now as there is no way to sync large amounts of files with such a slow transfer speed. I've included in the image below a rough sketch of how the network is laid out. Do any of you have any ideas as to why everything is going so slow?

Hello blcArmadillo,
Firstly - welcome to CompuForums. We provide our computer help for free, so we would appreciate it if you could help us. You can do this by answering other people's questions, or if you are not so technically-minded, post in our general lounge forum. Alternatively you can purchase a premium membership to help contribute to the rising running costs of this site, particularly where we are helping you with your business networking. If you can't help us then we can't help you. 1) What security software is running on these PCs? 2) Is the Dell switch 10 or 100MBPS? 3) Are all the network cards set to 100MBPS Full-Duplex? 4) What encryption settings are set on the router? 5) Is it a 802.11G or B router that you are using? Please answer these questions so that we can diagnose your problem.

I would suggest disabling Norton's system-slowing software on all machines for a while [and unplugging the internet cable from the router for security] and testing the transfer rate between them again.

Material desire. Hunger. Sexual Drive. Desire to dominate. Desire for fame. Humanity. As long as there is a body, desires will be born. The human ego will never disappear as long as desire remains present. Humans will continue to fight to fulfill their bodies desires and it will never end. At this rate there is no future. |
